What is inside the PDF

The Power Tips PDF is seven pages, set in five sections, with one tip per block. Each tip is short on theory and long on application: what the move is, when to use it, and the specific menu path or shortcut to run it. We wrote it so you can flip to a section, find the tip you need for what you are working on, and get back to the file without losing twenty minutes to a YouTube rabbit hole.

Section 1: Selections

Five techniques for making cleaner selections faster. Quick mask refinement that does not eat detail, the trick for selecting hair against a busy background, Select Subject combined with manual repair, color range for selecting by hue, and the workflow for saving and reusing complex selections so you do not have to redraw them later.

Section 2: Layers

Five non-destructive layer moves that most self-taught editors miss for years. Smart objects vs rasterizing and when each one wins, clipping masks for confined adjustments, the proper way to merge for retouching without losing the underlying edits, layer comps for client revisions, and group blend modes for compositing.

Section 3: Color

Five color decisions that hold up at print size. Curves over Levels and why, the LAB channel trick for boosting color without crushing skin tones, hue/saturation targeted to one channel at a time, color grading with solid color layers and blend modes, and how to soft-proof before you commit to an export.

Section 4: Retouching

Five techniques borrowed from beauty and product retouching that translate to almost any edit. Frequency separation done right, dodge and burn on a 50% gray layer, the patch tool vs healing brush vs clone, blemish work without smoothing the whole face, and selective sharpening that adds presence without artifacts.

Section 5: Speed

Five workflow shortcuts that compound. Custom action sets for your three most repeated tasks, keyboard remaps that match the way your hand actually moves, the scratch disk setting that fixes most "Photoshop is slow" complaints, batch export presets, and the file-organization habit that saves you twenty minutes every revision round.

Who this PDF is for

It is for editors who are already comfortable in Photoshop but suspect they are doing some things the slow way. If you can find the layers panel without looking and you know what a clipping mask is, you are in the right place. If you are still figuring out where the tools live, start with the shortcuts cheat sheet first, then come back here in a few months.

The tips work in any modern Photoshop version (Photoshop 2024, 2025, and 2026 are all covered, and most of them work back to CC 2018). A few of them also work in Affinity Photo and Photopea, and we flag those in the PDF.

How to actually use it

The worst way to use a tips PDF is to read it once, nod, and forget. The best way we have found, after handing this file to a few hundred readers and asking what they did with it, is this: print it, leave it next to your keyboard, and the next time you catch yourself doing something the long way, flip to the relevant section and try the tip on the file you have open. You will learn one or two per session. After a month they are habits.

If you prefer digital, the PDF is fully searchable, so command-F works. We numbered each tip so you can reference them in our newsletter or in your own notes.

Common questions

Is it really free?

Yes. The only ask is an email so we can send it to you and so you can opt in to occasional tips. You can unsubscribe immediately after the download lands and you will not hear from us again.

What email will you send me?

Roughly one short note every two to three weeks. Usually it is a new tutorial or a tool we have started using. We do not run sponsored sends and we do not pad the list with affiliate blasts.

Will the techniques work in my version of Photoshop?

If your Photoshop is from 2018 or later, yes, all 25. If you are on an older version, around 20 of them still work, and we note any that require a newer feature.

Can I share the PDF with a friend or my team?

Yes, share away. The only thing we ask is that you send them the link to this page rather than the bare PDF, so the next person can also subscribe if they want to.
